General Motors Names Monica Barten Head of Communications AME

General Motors (GM) has strengthened its regional marketing and communications leadership with the appointment of Monica Barten as Head of Communications for Africa and the Middle East. She succeeds Ronald Balit, who has transitioned into a new role within GM Middle East Product Marketing.

The leadership changes reflect GM’s continued focus on future mobility and its intent to deepen engagement with customers, partners, and stakeholders across the region.

In her new role, Barten will be responsible for shaping and executing GM’s communications strategy across Africa and the Middle East. Her mandate includes aligning communication initiatives with business objectives while reinforcing corporate credibility and brand reputation in key markets.

“Strong leadership is central to delivering our regional ambitions,” said Jack Uppal, President and Managing Director of General Motors Africa and Middle East.

“These appointments further strengthen our leadership team, combining regional insight with global expertise. They position us to support growth, transformation, and innovation across Africa and the Middle East.”

Barten brings more than ten years of experience in the Middle East, supported by a strong global career. She has previously held senior leadership positions at Visa, Standard Chartered Bank, and Philip Morris International.

“I’m excited to join General Motors at such a pivotal time for the company,” she said on her appointment.

“GM’s legacy, innovation leadership, and bold ambitions for the future present a unique opportunity. The team has built tremendous momentum in recent years, and I look forward to helping shape the next chapter of the GM story in the region,” Barten added.

As GM marks over a century of automotive presence across Africa and the Middle East, the company continues to focus on advancing autonomous technologies and digital services through its portfolio of brands, including Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac.
